A treatment center upgrade and expansion focused on comfort and serenity.

Overview

To keep up with ever-changing medical advancements, Karmanos Cancer Institute sought to expand and update their facility at the Lawrence and Idell Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center. Our team designed facility enhancements around the comfort of patients and their families with a spa-influenced theme.

Tailoring the Solution

A phased approach to enable continued care for cancer patients.

Our design builds upon the current architecture of the building while introducing a modern design that aligns with the future growth of oncology programs to be offered at the facility. Our team developed a phased project approach to meet the needs of staff, patients, and their families while keeping the space operational.

    Supporting What Matters

A simulation study to optimize the patient waiting experience.

During the renovation process, Karmanos sought to determine the impact of centralized versus decentralized registration processes on the patient waiting experience. Ghafari’s industrial engineering team developed discrete event simulation models to evaluate the efficient utilization of Patient Service Representative (PSRs) who perform patient intake.

We calculated PSR staffing levels required to yield a positive patient experience along with their utilizations. The simulation study supported the design efforts in shaping the waiting, registration, and scheduling spaces.
